From early on in his career Alex Vlasov was interested in making automatic drawings. These early series demonstrate Vlasov’s curiosity about calligraphy, language, mark, line, and space. The process itself becomes the driving force as the artist tries to empty his mind and focus primarily on making a drawing that the subconscious dictates you to make. As a result of witnessing the disparity between the foreground and background the viewer, in the words of Adrian Holt, “perceives the logic of pareidolia thus one’s inferences are their perception of his work through their own reality.”
